Real Stories, Real Impact

At Peasholme Charity, we work alongside individuals to provide the support they need, whether it’s immediate assistance in a time of crisis or long-term help to create lasting change.

Our aim is to empower individuals to take control of their circumstances and build a more secure future.
Here are just a few stories that showcase the difference our services make in the lives of people in our community.

Dave’s Journey — Navigating Crisis During the Pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Dave, a market researcher, found himself furloughed and later made redundant. Without income and with delays in his Universal Credit application, he faced real challenges just trying to meet his basic needs.

Referred to Peasholme Charity through York Foodbank, Dave met Sarah, one of our Community Advice Workers. Sarah offered immediate support by providing foodbank vouchers and assisting with emergency credit for his electricity meter.

“Peasholme Charity was a lifeline during the pandemic. They helped me with everything — from food vouchers to emergency money for my electricity. Without their support, I couldn’t have focused on looking for new work or even bought essentials. They helped me get through a really difficult time, and I can’t thank them enough.”

This support allowed Dave to focus on rebuilding his life and finding new employment without the constant stress of worrying about his basic needs.

Emma’s Path to Financial Stability

As a single mother of two young children, Emma found herself overwhelmed by mounting debts and the complexity of managing her finances. She struggled with understanding the benefits system and felt lost in trying to figure out what support she was entitled to.

Through our My Money, My Life (MMML) project, Emma was paired with one of our Financial Capability Coaches. They worked together to understand her financial situation, identify benefits she was eligible for, and create a manageable budget that worked for her family.

“I used to avoid looking at my bank account and I felt out of control. But my coach helped me break everything down into manageable steps, and now I can confidently handle my finances. I even have a plan to save for emergencies, which feels like a huge relief.”

Emma now feels empowered and in control of her financial future, giving her peace of mind and confidence in her ability to support her family.

Liam’s Transition to Secure Housing

Liam had been experiencing homelessness for several months. He was facing mental health challenges and didn’t know where to turn for support. With little access to housing options or services, he felt trapped and isolated.

Through outreach efforts, Liam was connected to Peasholme Charity. We provided guidance and support in securing housing and helped him navigate the housing application process. Our team worked alongside Liam, ensuring he had everything he needed to apply for and secure stable accommodation.

“Peasholme didn’t just tell me what to do; they walked with me every step of the way. I didn’t feel alone anymore. Thanks to their support, I now have stable housing and the chance to rebuild my life.”

Today, Liam has secure housing, is engaging with health services, and is taking steps towards rebuilding his life.
