Resettlement Outreach Support

All Shared Housing Scheme residents are helped to find long-term accommodation. Each Service User works with their Housing Support Worker to find a suitable home either in the private rented sector or with the Council or local Housing Association. No one moves from the Shared Housing Scheme until they feel ready to cope with an independent tenancy.

Before a Service User moves they meet with the Resettlement Outreach Worker and their Housing Support Worker in order to decide what ongoing support would be suitable for them.

Outreach Support is offered to Service Users for up to a year. However, if someone needs support for longer we stay involved. We never leave anyone struggling alone in his or her tenancy, unable to cope. If the Service User needs long-term support we arrange this. Our aim is to resettle people so that they don't become homeless again.

The Resettlement Outreach Worker covers the entire York area and visits people in their own home. As Service Users have been homeless in the past most have lost all personal possessions. When they move into their new home we help them to furnish and decorate. From getting the gas reconnected to decorating the kitchen, the Resettlement Outreach Worker will do just about anything that is involved in setting up and settling into a new home.

Ongoing support is given with practical things like cooking, home management, coping with bills and budgeting. We identify with the Service User the areas where they need guidance and work to a structured plan. Support is tailored to individual needs our aim being to enable people to do things for themselves. Our goal is to help people develop personally so they have the confidence and skill needed to live full and independent lives.

There is no typical homeless person, so everyone's support plan is different. There are numerous reasons why individuals become homeless. Each individual is helped to deal with whatever caused them to become homeless. Our aim is to help clients settle back into the community where they can be productive members of society and feel valued and happy. Developing life skills, self-reliance and self-confidence are important areas of support.
